Hopefully, you have a New Year’s Resolution specifically for your business. And hopefully, that resolution is to stay ahead of the latest ecommerce trends. The trends in the ecommerce industry fluctuate from year to year. The word “trend” may mean “short-lived” to you, but we believe these trends are here to stay. We did a careful ecommerce industry analysis and have identified five of the top trends for 2019. Admittedly, these may not be groundbreaking or “new” to you. However, there’s a good chance that you put them on the back burner. Let’s make 2019 the year where you introduce these trends into your eCommerce strategy.

Integrate your Ecommerce Store with Amazon

Amazon offers a few ways to integrate with their platform short of listing your products on their website. One of them is Amazon Pay. Amazon Pay integrates seamlessly through a variety of eCommerce platforms including Magento, BigCommerce, and Shopify. With 300 million users, you can adopt Amazon’s existing user base by offering a payment option through Amazon. With their payment and shipping information stored on Amazon, it makes the checkout process easier for your customers. Plus, you can piggy-back on the trust Amazon has garnered throughout the past two decades.
Amazon also offers “Fulfillment by Amazon” where they can pick, pack, and ship your products. The service isn’t free of course, but neither is hiring your own warehouse employees and storing all that inventory yourself. I’m just saying, it’s worth a look and many websites are already seeing the benefits of playing with Amazon rather than trying to fight against it.

Offloading Fulfillment

While we are talking about Fulfillment by Amazon, let’s look at other options. Other outsourced fulfillment options include companies like FedEx Fulfillment, ShopBob, and Shipwire. One of the biggest benefits of outsourcing your fulfillment is processing returns. Handling returns without a storefront can be a huge hassle and cost you just from the processing alone, not including the cost of shipping it back. Offering returns eases your customers’ minds and empowers them to fill up their shopping cart and hit “Checkout.”
There’s one more benefit to outsourcing I didn’t want to leave out. For startups, you may not know how much space you need. You are ready to graduate from your garage, but you’re not quite ready to commit to warehouse space. Outsourcing your fulfillment is the easiest it’s ever been in 2019. And it’s getting better because of the competition. Many companies are opening locally and offer flexible options for the customers to stay competitive.

Upscale Your Shipping Packages

You may have heard the phrase “everything communicates.” From the person who answers the phone to your packaging, customers are developing an opinion on the quality of your brand. The package you use for shipping is no exception and it is your customers’ first physical impression of your brand. Amazon’s signature tape and Goldbelly’s food-stuffed boxes are examples of good packaging for their products. Google “Goldbelly packaging” and you’ll see how nicely everything is packed into the box. No one wants to eat food that looks like it’s been rolling around for a few days.

Upscale Your Product Packaging

Product packing is also another component to this that should not be forgotten. Apple is a great example and thought leader on sleek, attractive packaging. For a decade now, smart-phone owners have indicated that one of the most satisfying experience of owning their phone was undressing it!
In fact, unboxing products make up some of the most watched Youtube channels. Marques Brownlee, iJustine, and Geeky Ranjit have tens of millions of followers between them and easily get 50k views per video. You may want to consider creating a brand-controlled version of your product unboxing so that customers can truly appreciate the value you are offering them.

Product Videos

While we are talking about it, let’s talk about product videos. Yes, product videos have been around for eons. How can this be a trend? Well, the TYPE of product videos people want to view has changed. We already mentioned unboxing, but let’s explain a little more about why.
For starters, many customers don’t realize what will come with the packaging. For instance, the Ring Doorbell includes mountain plates for better angles, a drill bit, wall anchors, and even a level. They provide you with almost everything you need to get the doorbell installed. You may have several pieces included with your products that many people many not understand based on the description you gave on your website. A video with you literally pulling items from the newly-opened box should dispell some doubt and fears.
Other types of videos that have seen major changes in format include product testing, product side-by-sides, tutorials, and more. We are seeing a revolt against Youtubers who spend over five seconds introducing their channel and begging you to subscribe. Many videos that last five minutes should only last 30 seconds. Be the video people WANT to watch, rather than HAVE to watch.
